Reading

At Netherfields Infants, we believe that learning to read is the key to unlocking the whole curriculum. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised as our systematic synthetic phonics programme to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader.

Little Wandle provides a clear, structured approach to teaching phonics, starting in the Early Years and continuing into Key Stage 1. Children are taught to recognise sounds, blend them to read words, and apply their skills in fully decodable reading books that closely match their phonics learning. This ensures that children experience success from the very start.

Reading is taught daily and is supported by regular practice, repetition and timely intervention where needed. We work closely with parents and carers, sharing resources and guidance so that reading at home complements learning in school.

Alongside phonics, we promote a love of reading through high-quality texts, story time, and access to a wide range of books. Our aim is for all children to leave our school as enthusiastic readers with the skills and confidence to read for pleasure and for purpose.
