Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Year 6! We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing Summer and are ready for the new school year!
As you know, Year 6 is a very important year in your child’s education, as it marks the final year of primary school and is also a SATS year. In 2024, Year 6 SATs week will take place on the week beginning Monday 13th May. The SATs tests will take place throughout the week, starting on Monday 13th and ending on Thursday 16th May. Can we please ask that you do not book any holidays for that week if possible, because your child will not be able to take the tests at a later date?
We thought it would be useful to let you know about the routines in Year 6, so that you can support your child in their learning:
- Spellings will be given out every Friday for a test on the following Friday. These spellings will be stuck into home spelling books each week. These spellings need practicing nightly if possible.
- There will be no weekly homework sent out, although occasional research will be asked of the children. However, after Christmas, revision workbooks will be sent home to help your child prepare for the SATS, and the expectation will be that they work from these books as often as possible.
- Your child is expected to read at least three times a week. We would appreciate it if you could sign your child’s organizer after they have read. They do not have to read aloud to you as we are aware of the demands on your time, but if your child has read independently, it would be helpful if you could ask them to tell you something about what they have just read.
- PE takes place every Monday and Thursday. Your child will leave school in their PE kit every Thursday.
We are fully aware that Year 6 can at times be stressful for your child (and for all the adults involved as well!), so if you have any issues or require support in any way, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Lilley & Miss Brown
